Frequently asked questions
Yes, it is fine to start the course at any stage of the year. You can choose to have access to the course material for either 12 or 24 months which allows for plenty of flexibility. If you are planning to sit the exams, then we would advise you to decide when you would like to do so and how much time you can devote to your studies.
GCSE courses take approximately 120 to 150 hours to complete. A Levels require approximately 350 hours of study. These are estimates and will vary depending on factors such as previous experience of the subject.
The GCSE courses are all suitable for students who are new to the subjects.
The Latin A Level builds on the materail covered in the GCSE, so we recommend that students follow the Latin GCSE before starting the A Level.
No, you do not need to have previously studied any of these subjects. You can be a complete beginner and start the Latin GCSE. The Classical Civilisation and Ancient History GCSEs are ideal if you wish to begin exploring the ancient world. If you have already developed an enthusiam for these subjects, the modules offered could allow you to further expand your knowledge.

A GCSE takes approximately 140 hours to complete and an A Level, approximately 350 hours.
Whilst the traditional time to start GCSE and A Level courses is September, it is worth noting that we have students starting courses throughout the year. We also have many adult students who are following the courses out of interest and who are not, necessarily, planning to take the exams.
We offer this choice to provide flexibility. The length of time you need depends on many factors such as work or other courses, holidays, past times and previous knowledge of the subject. A GCSE takes an approximately 100 to 140 hours to complete. An A Level takes approximately 350 hours.
We suggest planning a realistic timetable of how many hours (maybe commit to certain days and times) per week you can spend on the course, allowing for other time commitments.

Our courses are comprehensive and include narrated PowerPoints, study questions with suggested answers, exam guidance and access to a recent past paper with examplar answers and marking scheme. Learners also benefit from the resources that have been compiled to encourage further research.
You will need access to reliable broadband and a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone. We have made the courses accessible on a mobile for your convenience, however, we would recommend following the courses on larger devices for ease of use. You will also need to purchase the recommended textbook. Details of the textbook can be found on the subject page on this site.
When you purchase the course you will be sent an email with your username, password and a link to your Account Dashboard. Furthermore, an introductory video, located on the Dashboard, will show you how to easily navigate the course material.
The course fee does not include individual tutor support. Our courses provide exceptional, comprehensive material at an affordable cost. There are distance learning providers who offer tutor support and their fees reflect this. The support is usually via email.
Students following our courses benefit from the expertise of our course contributors. Dr Beer, for example, has contributed material for the current A Level Classical Civilisation syllabus and brings a wealth of teaching experience to the creation of our Classics courses.
As students progress through our courses they are able to check their understanding with study tasks, questions (and answers). It is also possible for students to revisit the sessions as often as required, allowing plenty of time to absorb and reflect on the material.
We consider our courses to be excellent value and hope you will too.
Yes, it is possible to extend access to the course for a further 12 months, the fee for which is £60.00. To arrange this, simply email us with the subject heading: Extension request.
Exam information
Private candidates are responsible for booking exams with an exam centre. The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) provides a useful resource which allows you to enter your postcode, qualification and exam board to find your local exam centres.
This is the link: https://www.jcq.org.uk/private-candidates/?user-postcode=BA115ND&user-lat=51.2149411&user-lon=-2.3179993&qualification-type=gcse&awarding-body=ocr
We recommend that you source an exam centre as soon as you decide you wish to sit the exam and contact them directly to check they can help.
The OCR website also has information for private candidates here: https://www.ocr.org.uk/students/private-candidates/
We also have useful information regarding booking the exams on our Exam information page here.
The course fee does not include the exam fees. Private candidates (ie not enrolled in a school of college) will need to contact their nearest private exam centre. Please see here for further information.
The course fee includes the course material, created by Dr Michael Beer.
Dr Beer has also provided access to a recent exam paper (usually locked), including the marking scheme, examiner’s report and candidate exemplar answers.
This opportunity to sit a recent paperprovides valuable feedback about where a student needs to focus before sitting the exam. It also provides important practice in exam skills such as timing and careful reading of the questions.
We have both school and independent learners following our courses. Independent students would need to book the exam with a private exam centre and their fees can vary. Sometimes local secondary schools and colleges will accommodate private candidates, so it can be worth making enquiries.
It is also worth mentioning that there is no requirement to sit the exams if you take one of our courses. We have students following our courses that do not intend to sit the exams but wish to expand their knowledge of Latin and the ancient world.
Do get in touch if you have further questions regarding arranging to sit the exams at info@sulislearning.co.uk
There is no requirement to sit the exams. Many adult learners have chosen to follow our courses simply to expand their knowledge of the ancient world and do not intend to sit the exams.
